Hamid, Best and Smith throw their hats into the ring

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

From MiltonSearch.com:

2010 has arrived and it looks like the race is on for Milton’s eight Town Council positions spread across it’s recently realigned 8 Wards.

Zeeshan Hamid started things off on January 4th by announcing his intention to run in Ward 8 on the Hawthorne Villager forums as well as his own blog and newly formed campaign page.

From his post January 4th on the Hawthorne Villager Forums:

It should come as no surprise to regular readers of villager that I have decided to enter the race for the Local council for Ward 8.

I am not going to make vague and ambiguous promises. I am not promising to change the world, bring about world peace, end world hunger or to teach every bad driver how to drive. However, I do unconditionally promise to be accessible, transparent and representative (full commitment).

A councillor is supposed to listen to his or her constituents and represent their interests in the Council. Those who know me know that I can do that very well.

I want to improve the quality of our lives, and those of our children (”our” = residents of Milton). You can get highlights on my campaign page (or drill in deeper to get a whole lot of details).

If you support me then perhaps you’ll considering fanning me on facebook to show support and making a little campaign donation. Every bit helps.

Zeeshan Hamid
Ward 8 Candidate for the Local Council

Announcing his candidacy was the worst-kept secret in town to those who regularly read the aforementioned forums, of which Zeeshan is both a frequent and much-appreciated contributor. His blog has become a must-read and you have to commend his passion for the community and for transparency and accountability in government. MiltonSearch.com would like to wish him the best of luck come election time this October 25.

It also came as no surprise later in the day when on the same venue, current Local and Regional Councillor Colin Best announced his intention to throw his hat back into the ring in 2010.

I want to let everyone on the hawthornevillager know that I have registered my candidacy for re-election and filed my nomination papers for the office of Local & Regional Councillor in the new ward 2,3,4,5 north of Derry road.

I congratulate all those who have registered today and encourage all Milton residents to become involved in this first election with eight local wards and two new regional wards.

Will be posting further information on my campaign and position on issues through my web site and blog at www.colinbest.ca.

Looking forward to talking with all the residents in the ward during the campaign and working for all the residents of Milton.

Colin Best
Local & regional councillor
Milton/Halton
www.colinbest.ca

Again, Colin is constantly connected to the community as a whole through his website and the local forums and has been über-responsive to all kinds of requests for information and updates on all things Milton for years now.

And just today, while perusing the world of Twitter, we stumbled across Jennifer Smith’s Twitter page.

On January 4th she posted the following:

is deciding whether to submit my nomination papers today, or wait a few weeks and keep ‘em guessing #miltonvote

Followed up yesterday by confirming her intentions:

just submitted my nomination papers. I am officially a candidate for Milton Town Councillor, Ward 2! #miltonvote

Smith’s blog Sprawlville: The quest for sustainability in Canada’s Fastest Growing Town is another essential read and we wish her luck as well in her campaign for office in 2010.

And so it begins. The next 10 months should be interesting in Milton with some fresh blood vying for a spot on our Local Council and no shortage of hot button topics in and around town. We’ll do our part to try to bring awareness of some of the issues facing Milton and how some of the candidates plan to tackle things.

As is has been over the past several years, we’re in a very important time in the history of this town we all call home. It’s time for everyone to get more involved so we can shape Milton’s future together.

After a poor voter turnout for the Municipal Elections in 2006, I think we can agree that the most important thing we can all do is educate ourselves, get to know the candidates and get out and vote come October!

Don’t leave your cars running

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

From Mike Cluett:

As a few residents of the area found out last week, its not a good idea to leave the cars running to warm up in the morning.  Here’s the story from the Milton Canadian Champion about what happened at several homes in Hawthorne Village.

If you must warm your car up in the morning, make sure the doors are locked or have an automatic car starter.  These thefts were really close to home for me and we have to make sure we are aware of what is going on around us. If you park your car in the driveway, make sure you lock your vehicle.  These crooks are fast and smart.  One will drive around the neighbourhood looking for cars that are running.  Another will get out and quickly check the vehicle to see if it’s unlocked.

If they can’t steal the car, they’ll try to get credit cards, cash, wallets, purses etc.

Milton Fall Fair: 2009 Edition

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

There are a ton of events for everyone, but for the kids, its all about the midway!

There are a ton of events for everyone, but for the kids, it's all about the midway!

Yep, it’s that time of the year again

And what a wonderful time of the year it is. Late September: the weather is still warm, fall colours are just beginning to appear on our foliage, and the annual Milton Fall Fair is rolling into town.

Kerrrrash! Its fun watching stuff get smashed.

Kerrrrash! It's fun watching stuff get smashed.

Every year, we have such a great day at the Fair with the whole family. The highlight of course, has to be the Demolition Derby. Count us in the demographic that ‘loves to see stuff get smashed up!’ The Friday/Saturday evening derbies are quite the event, but if you’ve got young children, don’t fret because there is another derby on Sunday afternoon at 2pm. That’s the one we usually catch.

It’s also fun for the kids to search for their crafts and works of art in the enclosed area underneath the grandstand. I know we wandered around for quite awhile in there last year, looking for my then 2-year old daughter’s 2 or 3 crafts/drawings.

Pony ride, anyone?

Pony ride, anyone?

The petting zoo and livestock barn are also big draws with the little ones, and you’ve gotta indulge and have some greasy fries and a burger/hot dog/sausage and/or a candy apple from one of the food vendors on-site.

Again, fortunately our kids love the Demoliton Derby as much as Mom and Dad, which means that’s become a must-see event. They really go crazy for the midway rides however, begging for more tickets after we’ve used them all up, begging to go on all of the rides they are too small for and truly loving the ones they actually get to ride.

Expect a full house for the Demolition Derby

Expect a full house for the Demolition Derby

The arrival of the first bit of cool, crisp fall air a couple of weeks ago prompted me to call up our photos from last year’s Fall Fair and post them in MiltonSearch.com’s online photo gallery. There are a ton of great shots, so feel free to check them out (yes, there are a lot of Demolition Derby shots).

We hope to see everyone out at this year’s Fall Fair — as of right now, the weather looks to be rainy for Saturday, but sunny and 23 celcius on Sunday (don’t quote me on that). If you’re new to Milton, well, I just can’t think of a better way to get a feel for your new community than to attend probably the Town’s signature attraction of the year.

Where else can you almost get hit by flying car parts?

GO Transit gets $500M boost

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

The question now is to see what this means for Milton, where extensive improvements have already been made to the GO Station over the past few years. Expanded train service on weekends? We encourage GO Transit riders to leave suggestions in our comments section below.

From The Toronto Star

Milton GO Transit Station

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says such investments "give us a more competitive economy in the longer term."

In a bid to get the ailing economy back on the rails, Ottawa and Queen’s Park are boosting investment in GO Transit.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Premier Dalton McGuinty today announced that up to $500 million will be spent to improve a dozen GO station parking lots and upgrading rail lines to increase service reliabiliity.

The funding will be divided equally between the provincial and federal governments.

Harper and McGuinty made a theatrical arrival at the GO yards in Mimico aboard a locomotive to disclose the news.

“This investment will create jobs for local construction workers in communities throughout Southern Ontario,” said Harper.

McGuinty said such investments “give us a more competitive economy in the longer term.”

“When transit is more convenient, more people leave their car at home. That means a better quality of life for our families and a cleaner, stronger and more beautiful province,” the premier said.

Today’s funding is a part of the previously announced $3.09 billion Ontario will receive from Ottawa’s Building Canada program.

Showdown looming in Halton

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Regional council passes resolution to stall growth of new developments if province doesn’t pay

With his councils backing, Carr will go to a planned meeting with Infrastructure Minister George Smitherman in early December to make his case that growth has not been paying for itself – and things have to change.

With his council's backing, Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr will go to a planned meeting with Infrastructure Minister George Smitherman in early December to make his case that growth has not been paying for itself – and things have to change.

On behalf of all Miltonians who have put up with lack of infrastructure in Milton relative to the Town’s feverish growth in population over the last 8 years, kudos to Gary Carr for laying down the gauntlet to Queen’s Park.

This has been a huge issue in Milton and elsewhere in Halton Region for years now, so it’s great news that Carr, backed by his council, will have a meeting in early December with Infrastructure Minister George Smitherman. Of course, Smitherman is on record as saying that Carr is simply “grandstanding.”

Right.

He’s just been “grandstanding” – of course there’s no issue in Halton (specifically Milton — Canada’s fastest-growing city) with things like traffic, daycare availability or funding for Milton District Hospital.

From MiltonSearch.com news:

“The tipping point for Halton, which has had to hike property taxes repeatedly to make up the difference, has been the issue of hospitals. With two new hospitals needed in the region and two expansions in the works, councillors are balking at being forced to pay what the province considers the region’s share – as much as one-third, or about $300 million – to provide facilities sufficient for an expected population growth of 100,000 over the next 13 years.

Gary Gregoris, vice-president of Mattamy Homes, the GTA’s biggest builder, was present at yesterday’s meeting and said he believes regional councillors are serious.

He warned, however, that development charge increases would just be passed on to consumers when builders factor them into the price of a new home. If housing prices continue to tumble “and the costs don’t go down, then something has got to give.”

Anyhoo, stay tuned and we’ll see where this all goes. In the meantime, we invite you to read previous opinions and news on this topic on MiltonSearch.com’s blog and news pages, including the most recent article.

End water fluoridation, professor says

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Dr. Hardy Limeback says almost everyone gets enough fluoride from toothpaste and other oral hygiene products.

Dr. Hardy Limeback says almost everyone gets enough fluoride from toothpaste and other oral hygiene products.

Last week we posted on the topic of “new” Milton’s water supply, which we all know is fluoridated and comes from the “big pipe” out of Lake Ontario. The rest of Milton’s water comes of course, from the Niagara Escarpment and isn’t fluoridated.

Apparently, Milton’s water fluoridation is now again up for discussion as it was a few years ago, when the local fishwrap was jammed with opinions and arguments (sometimes heated) for both sides.

Below is an interesting article found today, which seems to present the most popular belief these days, and an opinion shared by MiltonSearch.com, that it may be time to end adding fluoride to our water. Don’t we get what we need by brushing our teeth? Why not keep our drinking water as chemical-free as possible? It seems to make sense at least from a distance, and unlike a few years ago when this issue was raised, we seem to be seeing more common-sense arguments this time around, and from some reputable sources, which also helps.

It appears that in late 2008 at least, calling for the removal of fluoride from the drinking water doesn’t immediately label you as a “quack.”

As always, we encourage an open discussion, so feel free to give us your $.02 on this issue by clicking the comments link at the bottom of this article.

From Healthzone.ca:

End water fluoridation, professor says: people get enough from toothpaste, he argues.

Back in the 1960s, when the fluoridation of water became widespread, objections to the practice tended to come from the fringes.

It was a communist plot to poison the water supply, came the cry from some quarters.

Today, as municipalities begin to debate fluoridation anew, the arguments against it are more mainstream.

Halton’s Health and Social Services Committee recently voted to recommend to the full regional council that Halton stop fluoridating its water.

Added in trace concentrations to the drinking water of some 43 per cent of Canadian municipalities, fluoride has a proven track record of preventing tooth decay.

But today, many experts argue, we no longer need to run fluoride out of our taps.

That’s the conclusion University of Toronto dental professor Dr. Hardy Limeback came to long ago, after studying the issue extensively.

Limeback, whose fluoridation stance has caused some consternation in the dental and public health communities, says almost everyone gets enough fluoride from toothpaste and other oral hygiene products.

“Even those people who rely on food banks pick up fluoridated toothpaste for their families,” he said in an email interview, adding “fluoridated water is not needed for the poor.”

Indeed, Limeback says fluoridated toothpaste, introduced around the same time as the water supplies were being converted, is likely as responsible as tap water for the drop in decay.

As well, experts point out, some advanced countries such as Sweden never fluoridated water supplies, and many European countries are stopping the practice. Tooth decay rates are no higher in Europe than in Canada, Limeback says.

He also says there are legitimate health concerns associated with fluoridation, mainly related to the potential for over-ingestion.

In infants younger than one year, fluoride may cause dental fluorosis, or the staining of tooth enamel, according to a National Research Council of Canada warning in 2006.

Limeback points to studies linking fluoride to neural damage in infants, leading to lower IQ levels in later life.

If children brush with fluoridated toothpaste twice a day, they don’t need another source of fluoride, Limeback says.

2008 Milton Santa Claus Parade Route

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

MiltonSearch.com’s inbox has been flooded with inquiries as to the actual route this year’s Milton Santa Claus Parade will take, so we’ve decided to post it.

From the Milton Canadian Champion

This year’s parade will take place Sunday, Nov. 23 at 2 p. m. It’ll leave from the corner of Bronte and Barton streets, proceed along Main Street and end up at the rear parking lot of Milton Mall in front of the Winners store.

The theme for the 2008 parade is Christmas Around the World, which is sure to inspire a number of interesting floats depicting Christmas as it’s celebrated by diverse nationalities.

So there you have it, straight from the local fishwrap.

It’s sure to be a great parade this year, with, according to Regional Councillor Colin Best, “a few surprises in store.”

We encourage you to post any comments below, before or after the parade, and hey, if you have any photos of the parade, why not register for an account and post them on MiltonSearch.com’s photo gallery to share with all of Milton?

Let’s give Santa a warm Milton welcome!
