Fake Lake Parody
The buzz this past week was all about Jennifer Smith’s ‘Fake Lake’ parody. The multi-talented candidate for Ward 2 wrote a song poking fun at the mounting cost of the upcoming G20 Summit in Toronto to the tune of “If I Had a Million Dollars” by the Barenaked Ladies. A friend assisted with vocals and her son played guitar and the song was featured on the front page of the Toronto Star website.

It was nice to see Jennifer receive a fair bit of publicity for her efforts. She was also interviewed by several TV stations who aired the interviews and her video on the evening news. Granted, attacking the Harper government over G8/G20 Summit spending is low-hanging fruit so to speak, but nonetheless, well-played Jennifer.

Are your kids street-proofed?
In Ward 6, candidate Mike Cluett is out door-knocking (he recently stopped by the offices of MiltonSearch.com whilst making the rounds) and posting regularly on his blog as usual.

As a member of the Milton Community Policing Committee, Mike informs us of their efforts in connecting with principals of local schools in an attempt to raise awareness among students and their families.

Where is Milton’s traffic calming policy?
When Ward 2 candidate Jennifer Smith isn’t producing music videos, she’s also writing. Last week she questioned Milton’s traffic calming policy — specifically the lack thereof. Other mid-size Ontario communities like Caledon have this type of policy in place and she feels a similar one in Milton would give Town staff some options for traffic calming other than more stop signs.

Pedestrian crosswalk needed on Thompson at Metro Plaza
Ward 6 candidate Mike Cluett has already discussed the need for a traffic light or crosswalk around the Metro Plaza (Thompson/Louis St. Laurent) ad nauseum and now Ward 7 candidate Rick DiLorenzo is also championing this cause.

The issue here is that families living close to the Metro Plaza, or the park on the west side of Thompson with soccer fields, a playground and a splash pad are reluctant to walk to either destination if they have to cross Thompson Road. Cars soar along that stretch of Thompson, usually over 80 km/hour, traveling northbound from the rural countryside or speeding up as they leave town traveling south, making the intersection extremely dangerous for pedestrians.

Milton Transit Open House
Rick DiLorenzo also attended Milton Transit’s Open House this past Sunday and has posted several video clips of the event.

An example of an 'urban village' proposed by Ward 8 candidate, Zeeshan Hamid.

The Urban Village
Zeeshan Hamid, candidate for Milton Ward 8 recently posted his vision for Milton from an urban design standpoint: the urban village. Zeeshan is concerned about Milton’s urban sprawl and its lack of sustainability. The urban village concept instead focuses on bringing back traditional neighbourhoods where there is a mix of employment and residential activities enabling people to work closer to where they live (imagine that!). Such a plan is also contingent on a more aggressive effort to bring more jobs to town.

MiltonSearch.com wholeheartedly agrees with Mr. Hamid on most of his urban planning ideas — Milton needs to start working towards becoming an enviable ‘urban village’ or an ‘escarpment community’ as he phrased it earlier. Nice job, Zeeshan.

See where Milton spends your money
In the ‘better him than us’ category, Andrew Salmons, candidate in Ward 1, must have spent quite a bit of time compiling an amazing, interactive, year-over-year comparison of how and where the Town of Milton spends your tax dollars. Andrew states that the Town should publish expenses online in a similar, accessible manor in the name of transparent, efficient and open government.

Yup, that sounds about right to us.

All of the candidates featured in this edition of ‘On the Campaign Trail’ should be commended for the effort they have put into their websites, blogs and to communicate with not only voters but residents throughout Milton. We encourage you to bookmark their sites and those of the other candidates and current councillors in an attempt to stay informed ahead of this Fall’s municipal election.

Milton Fall Fair: 2009 Edition

There are a ton of events for everyone, but for the kids, its all about the midway!

There are a ton of events for everyone, but for the kids, it's all about the midway!

Yep, it’s that time of the year again

And what a wonderful time of the year it is. Late September: the weather is still warm, fall colours are just beginning to appear on our foliage, and the annual Milton Fall Fair is rolling into town.

Every year, we have such a great day at the Fair with the whole family. The highlight of course, has to be the Demolition Derby. Count us in the demographic that ‘loves to see stuff get smashed up!’ The Friday/Saturday evening derbies are quite the event, but if you’ve got young children, don’t fret because there is another derby on Sunday afternoon at 2pm. That’s the one we usually catch.

Kerrrrash! Its fun watching stuff get smashed.

Kerrrrash! It's fun watching stuff get smashed.

It’s also fun for the kids to search for their crafts and works of art in the enclosed area underneath the grandstand. I know we wandered around for quite awhile in there last year, looking for my then 2-year old daughter’s 2 or 3 crafts/drawings.

The petting zoo and livestock barn are also big draws with the little ones, and you’ve gotta indulge and have some greasy fries and a burger/hot dog/sausage and/or a candy apple from one of the food vendors on-site.

Again, fortunately our kids love the Demoliton Derby as much as Mom and Dad, which means that’s become a must-see event. They really go crazy for the midway rides however, begging for more tickets after we’ve used them all up, begging to go on all of the rides they are too small for and truly loving the ones they actually get to ride.

Expect a full house for the Demolition Derby

Expect a full house for the Demolition Derby

The arrival of the first bit of cool, crisp fall air a couple of weeks ago prompted me to call up our photos from last year’s Fall Fair and post them in MiltonSearch.com’s online photo gallery. There are a ton of great shots, so feel free to check them out (yes, there are a lot of Demolition Derby shots).

We hope to see everyone out at this year’s Fall Fair — as of right now, the weather looks to be rainy for Saturday, but sunny and 23 celcius on Sunday (don’t quote me on that). If you’re new to Milton, well, I just can’t think of a better way to get a feel for your new community than to attend probably the Town’s signature attraction of the year.

Where else can you almost get hit by flying car parts?

A day out at Kelso with the family, while you do something positive for the environment? Register to volunteer today!

A day out at Kelso with the family, while you do something positive for the environment -- register to volunteer today!

If you’re looking for a fun event this Spring where you can get out with the family and do something positive for the environment at the same time, MiltonSearch.com asks you to consider volunteering to plant trees at Kelso May 2nd. It’s a great event for a worthwhile cause and keep in mind they stop accepting registrants once the quota of 400 volunteers has been reached. High school students: volunteer community service hours are available if you register and attend the event. And the event includes a complimentary barbecue lunch, so come on, what are you waiting for?

Here is the release from Conservation Halton:

Conservation Halton is looking for 400 volunteers (families, individuals, students and groups) to help plant over 3000 trees on, Saturday, May 2nd, 2009. Over the years Conservation Halton has worked with hundreds of school groups and local communities to create a legacy of healthy forests. In fact, since 1956 Conservation Halton has planted over 2.25 million trees in its watershed.

This year’s Earth Day event will take place at the Kelso Conservation Area, which is located at 2345 Tremaine Road in Milton. The event is open to anyone who pre-registers. It takes place from 8:30am to 11:30am rain or shine. The event is free of charge and includes a complimentary barbecue.

Launched in 2006, Trees for Watershed Health is a community outreach program of Conservation Halton’s that involves engaging watershed residents and community groups in tree planting. The vision of the program is to bring communities and nature together to help increase forest cover in the watershed.

This rain or shine planting event is open to anyone who pre-registers. All volunteers will receive a thank you gift while supplies last! Volunteer community service hours are available for high school students who register and attend the event. You are welcome to forward this email to others who may be interested in participating.

About the program

The Trees for Watershed Health planting event provides an opportunity for watershed residents to take part in the transformation of marginal parklands into an area with healthy and abundant forest cover. This will help to offset the negative impacts of climate change in our watershed, while increasing biodiversity in the park. Situated on 397 hectares of regionally sensitive land Kelso Conservation Area has been chosen as an ideal location to continue our public tree planting program.

The forests of Conservation Halton’s watershed provide habitat for a myriad of wildlife species. They also provide ecosystem functions such as cleaning the air, purifying water and storing carbon along with providing places of unparalleled beauty for us all to enjoy. Protecting existing forests and increasing forest cover is an important aspect of sustaining the health of the watershed.

The Bee is Back!

March 21st, 2009

First-timers, or new-bees are always amazed by how much fun the whole event is. It is a wonderful night and people really get into the spirit of it.

First-timers, or "new-bees" are always amazed by how much fun the whole event is. It is a wonderful night and people really get into the spirit of it.

Adult Bee brings community together

The impact of low literacy touches everyone: No one knows that better than Literacy North Halton (LNH), a local non-profit agency.

In order to reinforce its mandate to raise awareness and funds for adult literacy programs in Milton and throughout North Halton, LNH is presenting the sixth annual Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee.

The popular local event is slated for May 7, 2009.  Organizers are sending out a call for teams to dust off their dictionaries, get creative with costumes and register now for the corporate spelling bee.

The Bee is a fun way for the community to come together to help support literacy at all levels, throughout Milton, Georgetown and Acton.  The event sees more than 20 teams of three from local businesses, organizations and non-profit agencies competing in a hilarious battle for spelling supremacy and for the coveted Spelling Bee trophy.  Teams generally dress in costume and are supported by a lively audience of more than 250 people. The Bee has sold out every year since it’s inception in 2004.

Spelling Bee Chair Theresa MacDonald says: “The success of The Bee has been remarkable. The community has really come together and embraced the literacy cause. We are grateful to our participants who have made it such a success because they have chosen to get involved and make a difference in people’s lives.”

While The Bee has a reputation as a fun-filled event, the underlying issue is a serious one, notes MacDonald.

“Literacy is a hidden problem and many are surprised to learn that one in five people in Ontario struggle with low literacy skills. It is an economic and quality of life issue and it impacts our whole community. Through the Read Spell Write program, Literacy North Halton trained volunteer tutors work at a grass roots level to help adults in our community improve their literacy skills in order to achieve their goals as students, as parents, as employees and as full participants in the civic life of our community.”

Registration is now open for new spelling bee teams, but with a large percentage of returning teams, space is limited and organizers recommend registering as soon as possible. For those considering entering a team, MacDonald has some advice.

“It’s not like the scary school bees where you were up there all by yourself. Our teams can work together to correctly spell their answer. I think first-timers or “new-bees” as we call them, are always amazed by how much fun the whole event is! It is a wonderful night and people really get into the spirit of it.”

For more information about the event and details of team registration, visit www.grategroanup.com or contact Literacy North Halton (905) 873-2200 or visit www.literacynh.org

The Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee Mascot and Milton’s Martin Street Public School students participated recently in a nation-wide attempt to set a new Guiness World Record  for Most Children Reading With an Adult, Multiple Locations. The event was held in honor of Family Literacy day, which raises awareness of literacy among all ages and was created by ABC Canada to promote the importance of reading and learning as a family.

From the Milton Canadian Champion

Milton Santa Claus Parade 2008 – Last call!

November 4th, 2008

From Colin Best, Milton Santa Claus Parade Assembly Marshall:

The 2008 Milton Santa Claus Parade takes place on Sunday, November 23 at 2pm along Main St. from Bronte St. South to the Winners parking lot behind Milton Mall

The 2008 Milton Santa Claus Parade takes place on Sunday, November 23 at 2pm along Main St. from Bronte St. South to the Winners parking lot behind Milton Mall

Hi everyone

Just to remind anyone who is interested in entering a float for the Santa Claus Parade the deadline is this week and there is only about 10 spaces left.

Check out the official parade website at miltonsantaclausparade.ca for entry forms and other information or email Mike Ricker at mlricker@sympatico.ca or call 905-876-1331. Forms can also be picked up at the UPS store at Main & Ontario St.

Also the parade committee is looking for volunteers to help on parade day Sunday November 23rd starting at 2 pm. on Bronte St. S. and going through the downtown area on Main St. to end at the Milton Mall parking lot in front of the Winners store.

Call either Linda Ricker at 905-876-1331 or Diana Bracken at 905-875-2109 to arrange to help in any of these areas: costumes, make up, candy, barricades, marshalling or assembly area. If you have teenagers looking for community hours, the committee needs help for about 2-4 hours depending on the location and the parade qualifies those hours.

The parade is organized by an all-volunteer committee and no tax dollars are used in the hosting of the parade which attracts nearly 20,000 people along the 3 km route. There is also a Salvation Army food drive at the front of the parade collecting non-perishable items through the Milton Firefighters and transit bus. Canada Post is also collecting letters to Santa from children in the area.

The committee is planning some surprises this year with new bands, attractions and a new sleigh for Santa!

Colin Best,
Assembly Marshall

Thanks Colin, and again a reminder that the 2008 Milton Santa Claus Parade takes place on Sunday, November 23, 2008 at 2pm and this year’s theme is “Christmas around the World.”
