The Leafs organization deserves a KW team so badly - they have earned the right to lose a majority of their fans to a better run team (which is basically most teams in the NHL). Both of my grandfathers will be rolling over in their respective graves if they heard me utter such propoganda - but even they would eventually have to agree.

The sad thing is that Yashin should have been bought out after the first year of that 10-year deal. As it is, Wang is buying out FOUR years - what would have been the big deal with an extra four or five. Yashin's been on vacation the whole time anyway... and that's not even the best part! Do you remember who the Sens picked up in the deal that sent Alexei to the Island? Oh, no one special - just Zdeno Chara and the high draft pick that eventually landed Spezza....

When it comes to JFJ... whatever. Any GM in T.O. would be making all of the same senseless moves. Sure, he's brought in and developed a few young guys (bringing in more than one would have been an improvement over the Quinn era), but the Kubina/McCabe/Raycroft signings made no sense.

As you mentioned, Capper (and I mentioned in an earlier blog post), the Raycroft signing just had me scratching my head. Guy has a great rookie year, then sucks and is dumped by the B's. The Leafs take a chance on him, which is great - low cost, high return, right? Suddenly, before the season even starts, JFJ out of nowhere signs him to a fairly lucrative 3-year deal, and even worse, doesn't bring in a capable or veteran backup to push him. Raycroft wasn't the biggest problem on this team last year, but he was unspectacular at best.

He simply overpaid for Kubina when one of the youngsters could have fit in that spot and done just as good of a job and left a bit more cap space. The McCabe signing was just ridiculous because frankly, he just isn't very good. And who was he bidding with for McCabe's services? I heard of no other interest or offers - he was bidding against himself.

Apparently JFJ's strengthened the scouting staff, and I liked bringing Maurice on, but that's about it. Then there's the Sundin situation - as much as I'd love to see him finish out in the blue & white, it just really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to bring him back at this point....

If it's not painfully obvious that this franchise doesn't really give a darn about winning the Stanley Cup, it will be once Balsillie opens up shop down the 401 and truly exposes them.

I for one will be right there joining the lineup to cheer on the Kitchener-Waterloo Blackberries....

Personally I despise the Leafs but I want a fans take on the news that the leafs are trying to hire a senior hockey man to help Fergie. I mean they extend his contract and now are going to pay someone else to babysit him? Rumors have it that they are looking at Muckler and Bowman ( ha like he'll leave the Wings for the Leafs).
As long as the Leafs are owned by a board only looking for profits they are never going to build a contender. Ownership needs to change before anything good will happen. Even with another local team the Leaf will no doubt still fill the ACC and the teachers will keep filling their pockets (what the entire summer off isn't good enough?). Mabey ownership isn't the problem it's the brain dead fans that keep buying tickets at bloated prices and snatch up all that god awful leaf wear you see everywhere.
I really hope nothing changes, I love the great belly laughs I get hearing Leaf fans telling everyone how great the team is or will be!
