NASA finds a shrimp deep below Antarctic ice where nothing should live

WASHINGTON—In a surprising discovery about where higher life can thrive, scientists for the first time found a shrimp-like creature and a jellyfish frolicking beneath a massive Antarctic ice sheet.

Six hundred feet (183 metres) below the ice where no light shines, scientists had figured nothing much more than a few microbes could exist.

That is why a team from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration was surprised when they lowered a video camera to get the first long look at the underbelly of an ice sheet in Antarctica. A curious shrimp-like creature came swimming by and then parked itself on the camera’s cable. Scientists also pulled up a tentacle they believe came from a foot-long jellyfish.

“We were operating on the presumption that nothing’s there,” said NASA ice scientist Robert Bindschadler, who will be presenting the initial findings and a video at an American Geophysical Union meeting Wednesday. “It was a shrimp you’d enjoy having on your plate.”

“We were just gaga over it,” he said of the 3-inch-long (76-millimeter, orange critter starring in their two-minute video. Technically, it’s not a shrimp. It’s a Lyssianasid amphipod, which is distantly related to shrimp.

The video is likely to inspire experts to rethink what they know about life in harsh environments. And it has scientists musing that if shrimp-like creatures can frolic below 600 feet (183 metres) of Antarctic ice in subfreezing dark water, what about other hostile places? What about Europa, a frozen moon of Jupiter?

“They are looking at the equivalent of a drop of water in a swimming pool that you would expect nothing to be living in and they found not one animal but two,” said biologist Stacy Kim of the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories in California, who joined the NASA team later. “We have no idea what’s going on down there.”

Microbiologist Cynan Ellis-Evans of the British Antarctic Survey called the finding intriguing.

“This is a first for the sub-glacial environment with that level of sophistication,” Ellis-Evans said. He said there have been findings somewhat similar, showing complex life in retreating ice shelves, but nothing quite directly under the ice like this.

Ellis-Evans said it is possible the creatures swam in from far away and do not live there permanently.

But Kim, who is a co-author of the study, doubts it. The site in West Antarctica is at least 12 miles (20 kilometres) from open seas. Bindschadler drilled an 8-inch-wide (200-millimeter) hole and was looking at a tiny amount of water. That means it’s unlikely that that two critters swam from great distances and were captured randomly in that small of an area, she said.

Yet scientists were puzzled at what the food source would be for these critters. While some microbes can make their own food out of chemicals in the ocean, complex life like the amphipod can’t, Kim said.

So how do they survive? That’s the key question, Kim said.

“It’s pretty amazing when you find a huge puzzle like that on a planet where we thought we know everything,” Kim said.

Life Hunters Target Methane Plumes on Mars

Friday, January 16th, 2009

From Wired.com:

Its still unclear whether the methane seeping out of the Martian ground is generated by geological or biological processes, but the discovery is surprising and important enough that it could reset NASAs Mars exploration strategy.

It's still unclear whether the methane seeping out of the Martian ground is generated by geological or biological processes, but the discovery is surprising and important enough that it could reset NASA's Mars exploration strategy.

Methane, an organic molecule that on Earth is usually produced by life, has been found emanating from three specific regions on the surface of Mars.

The regions have suddenly become the most defined and accessible regions in the solar system to look for extraterrestrial life. While the observation is not definitive proof of life on Mars, it’s the most promising sign yet.

It’s still unclear whether the methane seeping out of the Martian ground is generated by geological or biological processes, but the discovery is surprising and important enough that it could reset NASA’s Mars exploration strategy.

“It’s prudent that we begin to explore Mars looking for the possibility of a life form that’s exhaling methane,” said Lisa Pratt, director of NASA’s Astrobiology Team and a geoscientist at Indiana University who was not involved in the research.

Though we’ve been looking for life on Mars, it was no longer considered the best candidate for contemporary life in our solar system. Several scientific missions stretching from the Viking missions through the recently completed Mars Phoenix mission have found no evidence for life or liquid water on the surface of the red planet.

But the new spectroscopic observations of a seasonal methane release point to some active process on Mars — and it’s as likely to be life as anything else. That’s because most of the methane that we know here on Earth is produced by microbes as a waste product of, well, living.

“This is the first definitive detection of methane on Mars and the first definitive identification of active regions of release,” said Michael Mumma, a NASA Goddard Institute scientist and co-author of a paper Thursday in Science on the observations.

One region in particular — Nili Fossae — could be the subject of increasing attention. It was recently dropped from the list of landing sites for the next big upcoming Mars science mission.

Mumma’s co-author and Goddard colleague, Geronimo L. Villanueva, said that the results are particularly “striking” because the methane is coming from regions that have a “rich history.”

“These regions show evidence that water once flowed over them,” Villanueva said. “This is very important because if this water is still available below the surface, some activity, geology, biology could be using it.”

One region in particular — Nili Fossae — could be the subject of increasing attention. It was recently dropped from the list of landing sites for the next big upcoming Mars science mission, the Mars Science Laboratory. The new evidence could put Nili Fossae back onto the list, said Michael Meyer, NASA’s Mars program lead scientist, particularly with the recent two-year delay of that mission.

Pratt also argued that the observations and the regions about which they were made, are “doubly important” because life might not just exhaling methane, but using it as well.

“The fact that [we know methane] is now expressed in significant quantities at the surface allows us to say, it’s much easier to make a living consuming methane than to try to make a living of producing methane by carbonate reduction,” said Pratt. “If there is methane coming out in focused areas and there is life, then the life should be where the resource is. This gives us a bull’s eye to go after it.”

Suddenly, the search for life on Mars is exciting again.

“We are now entering a new era,” said Mumma. “Now we’re looking at an active Mars.”

Colorado State Patrol Officer Encountered UFO and “Human” Stranger

Monday, November 24th, 2008

From Earthfiles.com by Linda Moulton Howe:

Invisible cigar-shaped UFO: So, I stood there and looked at it - and then I saw it! Have you ever seen the movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger called Predator? It took place in a jungle and they had this alien enemy up in the trees and they could not see it until it moved because you could see right through it. Once it started to move, you could see the outline of it. But you really had to be looking hard. That’s exactly what happened with this UFO thing.

Once it started to move, you could see the outline of it. But you really had to be looking hard. That’s exactly what happened with this UFO thing."

Albuquerque, New Mexico – As a professional journalist, I know that the men and women who work in police departments and sheriff’s offices are often exposed to many high strangeness events that are never reported to the public. I know firsthand from those in law enforcement who told me they had come to the conclusion in the 1970s that the perpetrators of worldwide animal mutilations are “creatures from outer space,” but most of them would not speak on the record in front of a TV camera.

So, when I receive a letter or email from a retired law enforcement professional who says he is still haunted by an encounter with a large unidentified aerial craft that occurred in 1992, I try to follow up.

That’s what happened this fall with Jon M. Spaulding, who has given me permission to use his full real name. He was born in 1945 and is now retired at age 63 with a serious breathing disability that might be linked to his UFO encounter in 1992. He worked in law enforcement in Rumford, Maine, and in the Colorado Springs, Colorado, region from 1982 until 2001. He was chief investigator in a detectives team when he retired because of his physical disability.

In the late fall of 1992, he was working for the state police based in Colorado Springs, but to make ends meet for his family, he held another job in restaurant management at night. His strange story begins as he got into his car around 5 PM to go to the restaurant. It was nearly winter season and the sun had set, but the sky was still grey.

Interview with Linda Moulton Howe:

Jon M. Spaulding, retired police detective in law enforcement career from 1982 to 2001:   “At that time in fall 1992, I had two jobs. I was a state police officer for Colorado during the day and at night, I was manager of an up scale restaurant and lounge in Colorado Springs. My normal restaurant work hours were from 6 PM to 3 AM. I was on my way to work. I left a little early that night because I wanted to eat dinner there before I went on shift.

So, I backed out of my driveway in Colorado Springs. My house sat across the street from one of the city golf courses there. I backed out of my driveway onto my street and go east half a block to a T-intersection and stop sign there. Across the street from that stop sign is the golf course at the 9th fairway. When I got to that stop sign, I turned right and when you turn right and look down that 9th fairway you can see the tee-box where people tee off in golf. You always had to look down there because if you turn at the wrong time and someone hit a golf ball (laughs), it might come through your windshield. There was no one at the tee-box or out on the course. As I make my right turn, I looked up and noticed above the top of the trees and probably a thousand yards away were what appeared to be landing lights of a large aircraft.

Colorado Springs is heavily military. You have Fort Carson on one end. You have Ent Air Base or Pete Field out on the far east side. Up north, you have the USAF Academy. There’s a lot of military around there, but flight patterns were not over our area (of house). So this was not a normal flight pattern for any plane to be.

I looked at what I thought was a plane and it was only a couple hundred yards off the ground. I’m thinking, ‘My God, this guy is going to crash and he’s going to hit me. I can’t get out of the way.’ I kind of froze, to tell you the truth.

The longer I looked at him, the more I realized it was not moving very fast. He was moving extremely slow. I couldn’t figure out what it was. I backed the car up, parked and got out. I walked across the street where there is a 6-foot-high chain link fence that separates the public from the golf course there. I leaned against that fence and watched whatever it was – these two lights – and they seemed to be about 50 to 60 feet apart from one another. The lights came over the top of a stand of trees that are on the opposite side of fairway # 9. The object came over the top of those trees and stopped right there. Then it lowered itself to probably 50 or 60 feet off the ground at the most. The lights were there, but I couldn’t see any craft. I couldn’t see whatever this was.

I could see the trees through it. I could see the sky through it. But I couldn’t see what the object was.

LMH: WHEN YOU SAY YOU COULD SEE THE SKY AND TREES THROUGH IT, YOU MEAN THROUGH THE LIGHT?

Try to picture this. If you had a light in your left hand and a light in your right hand and extended both hands straight out, that space in between the lights you could see through.

LMH: WHAT YOU MEAN IS THAT YOU’VE GOT TWO LIGHTS COMING SLOWLY AT YOU THAT YOU FIRST THOUGHT WERE HEADLIGHTS OF AN AIRPLANE, BUT YOU CAN SEE TREES AND SKY CLEARLY BETWEEN THE TWO LIGHTS.

Correct.

LMH: SO THAT SUGGESTS IT WAS TWO LIGHTS PERHAPS FLYING IN FORMATION AS OPPOSED TO ONE, BIG STRUCTURED CRAFT?

That’s what it first suggested to me. And the more I looked at that thing – it was just sitting there in mid-air 50 or 60 feet off the ground. There was absolutely no sound whatsoever. No wind, which is unusual for Colorado. No sound. There were no golfers or others on the course that could be seen. In our neighborhood, we had lots and lots of kids, lots and lots of young adults with animals. Everyone was always out walking their dogs; the kids were playing in the yards. There was no one and there was no sound! It was very unusual.

I looked around to find someone I could ask, ‘Hey, are you seeing what I’m seeing?’ But there was no one around anywhere.

I thought I would run into the house and get my camera, but then I thought the thing would be gone by the time I got back.

CNN’S American Morning to Feature UFO Week

Monday, November 24th, 2008

The week of November 24 is UFO Week on CNNs morning show.

The week of November 24 is UFO Week on CNN's morning show.

There have been a series of recent events that have lead many to believe that Barack Obama could be the “Disclosure President”.

Awhile back, the Vatican came out with an unprovoked official press release talking about the possibility of extra-terrestrial life and that it wouldn’t necessarily conflict with Christian views and values. Jesus loves all of us and apparently he had room for ET in his family too.

The mainstream media before that announcement and since, has also been treating UFO-related stories with a bit more respect and featuring them more prominently and often as regular news stories.

The recent announcement of John Podesta as head of the Obama transition team raised a “Spockian-eyebrow” as well, as it has been well-known that Podesta, under the Clinton administration, was a big proponent of UFO/alien disclosure.

And now this from Whitley Strieber’s Unknown Country website: CNN’s morning show will be featuring “UFO Week”…

Beginning on Monday, November 24, when Clinton White House Chief of Staff and head of the Obama transition team John Podesta, along with astronaut Edgar Mitchell and Dan Akroyd all tell their own UFO stories, CNN’S morning show will spend the week with aliens and UFOs.

On Tuesday, they will go to Roswell, on Wednesday they will address close encounters and abductions, on Thursday radio astronomy and on Friday the “Mars Worm” picture taken by NASA’S Mars Rover that may be proof that there is or once was life on Mars.
